Some 55 jobs will be created in Dumfries as retailers Debenhams has said it is due to open its doors at a new store in May. The chain confirmed its plans to move into the former TJ Hughes site on the town’s High Street and it will be the 16th store to be opened by Debenhams in Scotland.
Unemployment in Scotland is officially above the UK average. The jobless figures rose by 16,000 in the three months from October to December to reach 231,000. The Scottish rate now stands at 8.6 per cent which is above the UK figure of 8.4%.
