Unemployment in Scotland is officially above the UK average. The jobless figures rose by 16,000 in the three months from October to December to reach 231,000. The Scottish rate now stands at 8.6 per cent which is above the UK figure of 8.4%. A further blow was that employment in Scotland fell by 20,000 over the quarter to reach 2,458,000. Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney reflected that it was clear that “further sustained action” was needed to support Scotland's economic recovery.
