Chief constables are heading for a vat – or more accurately VAT – of trouble. The problem centres around the new single force in Scotland which would be liable for £22 million per year in VAT to the Treasury, because of changes in the way the new police service will be funded. Les Gray, chairman of the Scottish Police Federation, said: “It would be ludicrous if the new police service had to pay VAT. That would be like washing public funds down the drain.”
